OUR REEFS, OUR FUTURE.

Hafa Adai!

Guam's coral reefs are the essence of the economic, cultural, poltical, and social viability of our island. However, our reefs are being degraded, both from natural climatological and anthropogenic (man) induced causes. The International Coral Reef Initiative was established in 1994 in an effort to protect coral reefs on a global level. In 1997, the Government of Guam passed Executive Order 97-10, thus adopting a Guam Coral Reef Initiative to establish a policy development mechanism for the protection of Guam's coral reefs.

We directly address five main threats to our reefs: Land-based Sources of ollution, Fishery Management, Recreation Use and Mis-Use, Lack of Awareness, Coral Bleaching and Disease and Global Climate Change.
